    Arabic Calligraphy: Hüsnühat -- The Practice of Beautiful Writing with Gulnaz Mahboob
    11 - 15 April 2016 - 10:30 to 17:30
    at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts, 19-22 Charlotte Road, London
    The short course introduces you to the highest form of Islamic art 'Hüsnühat' -the practice of beautiful writing according to the Ottoman School of writing. It is a practical introduction to Islamic/Arabic writing and provides participants a step by step guide to writing the Arabic letters in the Nesih/Naskh script.
    Tutor biography

    Gulnaz Mahboob is a British Calligrapher who has recently returned to England after travelling overseas for a number of years. She is based in London and teaches regularly at institutes and privately. In 2012 she was awarded the Ijazet in the thuluth and naskh scripts according to the Ottoman tradition. Having received her Ijazet she has become part of a continuum that is more than 10 centuries of calligraphic tradition and thus a transmitter of this living tradition in the UK. Her background in anthropology will also offer fresh perspective on what is a dynamic bond that is established between the student, the master, the letters and the repetitive practices.

    An Introduction to the Practice, Method & Materials of Islamic Calligraphy
    18 - 22 April 2016 - 10:30 to 16:30
    at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts, 19-22 Charlotte Road, London
    In this course you will be introduced to the practice, methods and materials used by calligraphers in the Islamic calligraphy tradition. Participants will learn how to prepare their own reed pen and sized paper. They will practice writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie the letters. The course concludes with each participant making a final piece using gold leaf.

    Tutor Biography

    Soraya Syed has been practicing as a professional calligrapher for over a decade and was the first Briton to receive the coveted icazetname or calligraphy license from Istanbul. She graduated with an MA in Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts from PSTA in 2001 and believes that this unique combination of education and training gives her privileged insight into the arts.
