    Dear all,
I'm so glad to join this beautiful forum,
I've practiced calligraphy since i was a child. It has always mesmerized me ever since i studied it at school.
but life takes us away from the things we most love.
I decided to focus again on this magnificent art, as it is soothing, meditative and ignites the soul.

Anybody knows any information on classes in los angeles area, or Master calligraphers who will be willing to give lessons and teach me.
I'm an Egyptian residing in LA, i have some basics but I'm a little rusty and in need of some guidance. I read and write Arabic fluently.

For the time being, and as it has always had been I was a self learner except for a short term class i took back in Egypt with a great calligrapher called Alaa.
If i haven't gotten lucky and didn't find any classes here. I will learn from books.
But i don't know how to prepare my own "Qalam" and what's the most suitable paper to use? if anybody could help me with that. I tried some glossy paper before, it was so smooth in writing. I don't know if that's the Special coated paper that was mentioned on the website. Where i can get that from?

    Thanks for your help =)
    Have a blissful day,
    Dalia Ali

    Hi Dalia,
Welcome to the forum! Here's a list of the teachers and classes that I know of: http://calligraphyqalam.com/resources/classes-and-teachers.html; unfortunately it looks like most of the teachers I know are in San Francisco, but it may be worth contacting them and asking if they know of anyone. Let us know if you find someone, and I'll add them to the list!

In terms of supplies, you can order them from http://www.arabiccalligraphysupplies.com/ - Josh Berer runs this site and he has most everything you will need.

Here are a few other links, etc that may also be helpful:

    Calligraphy supplies from Turkey
Look for “hat” on the lower right side of the homepage.

    Pen Knife

    Paterson Papers
Mohawk 50/10 Matte Plus Soft White (product number MO507-35SWP)

    I wish you the best!

    Hi Dalia,
There are no *Arabic* calligraphy classes in LA but several Persian calligraphy teachers with whom you could work. Payman Hamed at persiancalligraphy.org, and Massoud Valipour who runs a shop on Westwood Blvd called Ketabsara are the best places to start. As Elisabeth mentioned, I can get you any supplies you need.
    Best of luck!
